Hermes

Hermes is the name of the Greek god known for carrying messages between the gods and moving across boundaries. A proposed connection with Greek herma, a stone heap or boundary marker, fits that role, although a pre-Greek origin has also been suggested. The familiar explanation is therefore plausible rather than completely certain.

In mythology, Hermes is associated with travelers, merchants, athletes, and several other groups, and is often represented with winged attributes that emphasize speed. The name was also used by people in antiquity, so its personal use is not solely a modern borrowing from a mythological character. Modern businesses have made the spelling familiar in other settings, but the ancient divine and personal-name history remains the more substantial background for a child’s name.
