Hiram

Hiram is a biblical name traditionally interpreted as “exalted brother” or “brother of the exalted one.” One prominent bearer in the Hebrew Bible is the king of Tyre associated with Solomon’s building of the Temple in Jerusalem. That historical-religious setting gives the name a specific identity beyond its literal translation.

The name also appears in American history: Ulysses S. Grant was born Hiram Ulysses Grant, and singer Hank Williams was born Hiram. Their later names do not make Hank or Ulysses automatic variants of Hiram. Hi is a familiar short form, while Hyrum is a spelling alternative. A family may choose Hiram to preserve either the biblical connection or an individual namesake.
