Houston

Houston is a Scottish surname and place name commonly interpreted as “Hugh's settlement.” Its ending comes from the familiar place-name element for an enclosure or settlement. The Texas city gives Houston another strong geographical association, but the surname history is older than that American city connection.

For an American family, Houston may evoke Texas, a family surname, or a personal memory of the city. Those associations are different from the literal historical meaning. Huston is a related spelling worth comparing, while surnames such as Hutchinson should not be treated as simple interchangeable versions merely because they share a distant Hugh connection. Houston's place-name character is clear without assigning it a particular lifestyle or personality.
