Ida

Ida is a Germanic name usually connected with an element meaning “work” or “industriousness.” Its short form has a long naming history, including use in northern Europe and English-speaking countries. The Greek place name Mount Ida and similar-looking names in other traditions are separate connections, not proof that every Ida has the same origin or meaning.

Journalist and civil rights campaigner Ida B. Wells is a significant American namesake. The name also appears in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Princess Ida, giving it a theatrical association. Pronunciation varies: English speakers often begin it like “eye,” while many European speakers use an “ee” sound. Parents choosing Ida may want to settle that preference early, especially when relatives use more than one language.
