Idalia

Idalia has more than one historical strand. In the classical tradition, it is associated with Idalion, an ancient city on Cyprus linked with the worship of Aphrodite. A separate medieval record places the name in France, where it is interpreted as a familiar form of Germanic names beginning with an element of uncertain meaning.

These histories give Idalia a richer background than a single sunny translation. The classical connection points to a particular place and goddess, while the medieval record shows a personal name used in another setting. Ida is a natural name to compare when exploring the Germanic side. Idalia's longer ending gives it a different rhythm while preserving those older cultural associations.
