Ignatius

Ignatius comes from the Roman name Egnatius, whose original meaning is uncertain. Its later spelling encouraged an association with Latin ignis, meaning fire, which explains the familiar fiery interpretation. That link is a longstanding part of the name’s story even though it is different from a securely established original translation.

Several saints carried the name, including Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits. Ignacio, Ignazio, and Ignace show how it developed in other languages. The full name has a formal, historical presence, while Iggy provides a much lighter everyday option. That contrast allows a family to keep the substantial traditional form without needing to use every syllable in casual conversation.
