Ileana

Ileana is strongly associated with Romanian naming and is generally linked with Elena, a form of Helen. The deeper Greek meaning of Helen is uncertain, although “torch” is a leading explanation. Ileana’s light-related interpretation therefore comes through that proposed relationship rather than from a separate Romanian word meaning light.

Romanian folklore gives the name a distinctive identity through a princess who appears in tales of danger and rescue. It has also been used by Romanian royalty, placing it in both imagined and documented history. Ilinca is an established shorter relative. Families comparing Ileana with Elena may find that the former carries a more specifically Romanian association, while both remain connected with the much wider Helen family found across Europe.
