Ilias

Ilias is the modern Greek form of the name known in English as Elijah. It ultimately comes from Hebrew elements expressing the statement Yahweh is God. Its spelling reflects the Greek form and pronunciation, with a history shared by both everyday family naming and religious tradition.

The prophet Elijah connects the name with biblical tradition, while its Greek use also carries the history of Christian devotion to Saint Elias. Elias is another familiar Latin-letter form of the same family. A parent choosing Ilias can therefore honor an Elijah while keeping a distinct Greek identity. The name’s cultural story is one of a Hebrew scriptural name taking a lasting place in Greek language and religious life.
