Inez

Inez is a form associated with Spanish Inés, ultimately related to Agnes and a Greek word meaning “pure.” Its compact spelling hides a much longer history of related names across European languages. The final z distinguishes this version from Ines without requiring a separate underlying meaning.

Inez Milholland and Inez Haynes Irwin were notable figures in the American women's suffrage movement. Their names give Inez a historical association beyond its linguistic derivation. Inés preserves the Spanish accent, while Agnes makes the older name family more recognizable to English readers. Inez usually stands on its own, and its brief shape leaves little need for a separate nickname.
