Ishmael

Ishmael comes from a Hebrew name commonly translated as “God hears.” In the Bible he is the son of Abraham and Hagar, and his naming is tied to God hearing Hagar's distress. Ishmael also has an important place in Islamic tradition, where forms such as Ismail are familiar.

The narrator of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick gives Ishmael a separate literary association, and writer Ishmael Reed is a real-world bearer. Ismael and Ismail are related forms, although their language settings and pronunciations differ. The name can therefore connect with scripture, literature, or family history without those reasons being interchangeable. Its hearing meaning is specific and should not be expanded into a general promise of success or protection.
