Izael

Izael is associated with Isael, a Portuguese form related to Israel. The older Hebrew name is traditionally connected with striving or struggling with God and has a central place in the biblical story of Jacob. Izael’s shorter spelling preserves a proposed name-family relationship while omitting the r of Israel.

Isael is the nearest spelling comparison, while Israel makes the older connection more immediately visible. The ending el is common in Hebrew names containing a divine element, but resemblance to that ending does not make Izael an angel’s name. Its intended pronunciation and family tradition are more useful guides than a modern association based only on the letter z.
