Jacoby

Jacoby is a surname form related to Jacob that has also become a first name. Jacob’s biblical story includes a connection with the heel and with supplanting, which explains the traditional meaning often given in name lists. Jacoby inherits that wider family history rather than containing an independent word meaning “supplanter.”

Baseball player Jacoby Ellsbury is a recognizable bearer of the first name. The added ending gives Jacoby a different rhythm from Jacob while retaining a visible relationship, and Jake can serve as a familiar form. Surname pronunciation and first-name pronunciation may differ between families, so the spelling alone does not establish one compulsory stress pattern. The particular family tradition is often the best guide.
