Jacques

Jacques is the French counterpart of both Jacob and James. The forms share a history through Latin Iacobus and the Hebrew name Ya‘aqov. Biblical tradition connects Jacob with grasping the heel and supplanting, though the name’s earliest linguistic development is more complex than that familiar story-based translation.

The final written s is normally silent in French, giving Jacques a compact sound despite its six letters. Explorer Jacques Cartier, filmmaker Jacques Tati, and philosopher Jacques Derrida are among its well-known bearers. The children’s song Frère Jacques gives many English speakers an early introduction to it. Choosing Jacques can therefore honor the broad Jacob-and-James tradition while keeping a clearly French form and a substantial cultural history of its own.
