Jairus

Jairus is a Greek-derived form of the Hebrew Jair, a name connected with shining or giving light. It is often interpreted in religious naming as God enlightens, while the underlying Hebrew form concerns illumination. The ending reflects the way the name entered Greek and later English biblical tradition.

In the Gospels, Jairus is a synagogue leader who asks Jesus to help his daughter. The account of her restoration to life gives the name a distinct New Testament story rather than only a light-related meaning. Jair shows the older Hebrew form more directly, while Jairo is a related form familiar in Spanish and other languages. Jairus keeps the form recognizable from many English translations.
