Jamila

Jamila is the feminine form of the Arabic name Jamil, meaning beautiful. The name comes from a familiar Arabic word family concerned with beauty, giving it a direct lexical meaning. It has a long history in Muslim naming traditions, including through a wife of the caliph Umar.

Jamilah and Jameela are alternative spellings used to represent the same underlying name in Latin letters. Other languages have adapted it further, including Turkish Cemile, showing how the name traveled across communities while retaining its core meaning. Jamila can stand on its own without a longer formal version. For a family choosing it, the Arabic language connection and the established name tradition provide substance beyond the simple description of beauty.
