Meaning & origin

What does Jamin mean?

Jamin means “Right hand”.

Jamin is a biblical name connected with the Hebrew word for the right hand or right side. In Genesis, Jamin is one of Simeon's sons and therefore a grandson of Jacob. That gives it an independent biblical history: it did not need to be created as a shortened version of Benjamin.

The connection with Benjamin is nevertheless real, because the two names share the same Hebrew element. Benjamin adds the element meaning son, while Jamin uses the other part on its own. Yamin is another way of representing the Hebrew name in the Latin alphabet, retaining an initial y sound where English biblical spelling uses j. Jamin can also be used informally for Benjamin in some families, but the shorter name stands on its own in the biblical text.
