Janelle

Janelle is an elaborated form of Jane, a name in the John family whose Hebrew root is traditionally interpreted as “God is gracious.” The ending gives Jane a longer modern form rather than adding a separate ancient meaning. That relationship can provide a clear family connection even when the names sound different at first.

Jan, Nell, and Elle offer several possible shortenings, each emphasizing another part of the spelling. A family honoring a Jane can choose Janelle to preserve the root without repeating the exact name. Its second-syllable emphasis also gives it a different rhythm from Jane, which is useful to hear beside the full surname before deciding.
