Janna

Janna is an established familiar form of Johanna in Dutch and related European naming traditions. Johanna belongs to the John family, ultimately from a Hebrew expression meaning God is gracious. The shorter form preserves that connection while using only two syllables.

Pronunciation depends on language: Dutch generally begins the name with a sound like English y, while English-speaking families may use the j sound in Jane. Janna should also be distinguished from Arabic Jannah, the word and name associated with a garden or paradise. The similar spelling does not make those etymologies the same. For a family honoring a Johanna, Janna offers a direct familiar form with its own established use as a complete given name.
