Javi

Javi is a familiar short form of Javier, the Spanish name related to Xavier. The name began with a Basque place name meaning new house and became widely known through Saint Francis Xavier, the sixteenth-century missionary. Javi keeps the opening of Javier while giving it a brief, everyday form.

For a Spanish-speaking family, the j normally has the sound heard at the beginning of Javier rather than the English j in James. Hearing the family's pronunciation helps make that connection clear. Javi can be used as a nickname or as the complete name a child receives. Its short shape therefore carries a surprisingly specific journey from a Basque place, through a saint's name, into ordinary personal and family use.
