Jennie

Jennie has a history as a familiar form of Jane, Janet, and Jean, names that share John's Hebrew meaning “God is gracious.” It was also used independently before Jennifer became widely familiar. When used for Jennifer, it belongs to the separate Cornish Guinevere family instead, so the intended longer name helps explain its meaning.

The -ie ending gives Jennie the look of an affectionate pet form, but it can be the full name on a birth certificate. Jenny and Jenni are nearby spellings, and Jen offers an even shorter everyday option. For a family honoring an older Jennie or Janet, the name can carry a direct personal connection without expanding it to Jennifer. Its history is therefore broader than its association with any one modern name.
