Jewel

Jewel is an English word name for a precious stone or a valued ornament. Unlike Ruby or Pearl, it does not identify one particular gem. The broader word can also describe something treasured, which explains the affectionate association many families attach to it without making “beloved” its only literal definition.

Jewel has historical use as a given name for both boys and girls, including early twentieth-century American records. Jewell is a closely related spelling that adds a final l. The name can stand alone without a longer formal version, and a family may value either its gemstone imagery or its sense of preciousness. Those meanings come from ordinary English rather than an invented ancient derivation.
