Jillian

Jillian is a spelling of Gillian, a form in the Julian and Juliana name family. The opening J makes the usual English consonant sound explicit, avoiding the hard-g reading some people give to Gillian. “Youthful” is a familiar traditional interpretation associated with this family, although the older Roman name’s derivation is not securely settled.

Jill provides a recognizable shorter form, while Jillian offers a longer formal option. Gillian keeps the earlier English spelling and Juliana makes another branch of the family visible. These forms need not be pronounced alike to share a history. The choice between Jillian and Gillian is especially about how the written opening represents the intended sound.
