Josephina

Josephina is a feminine form of Joseph, ultimately from Hebrew Yosef. Its usual meaning, “God will add,” belongs to the biblical naming story associated with Joseph. The spelling keeps the ph of the English Joseph while adding the extended -ina ending, giving it a different rhythm from Josephine.

Josefina is a closely related form used in Spanish and other languages, where the spelling follows different conventions. Jo, Josie, and Fina offer distinct everyday options: the first two preserve the beginning, while Fina draws on the end. Josephina can therefore honor a Joseph or Josephine in the family while remaining a complete name with its own four-syllable shape and range of familiar forms.
