Josh

Josh is the familiar short form of Joshua, a Hebrew biblical name traditionally interpreted as the Lord is salvation. Joshua’s role as Moses’ successor gives the longer name a clear scriptural history. Josh keeps that family connection in a single syllable and can be used either informally or as the complete first name.

The shortened form has a straightforward, familiar sound in English, while Joshua offers the more formal relative. Families honoring a Joshua may prefer Josh because it matches the name actually used in daily life. Choosing the short form officially preserves that personal connection without implying that the biblical figure himself was called Josh in the original text.
