Jovan

Jovan is a South Slavic form of John, especially associated with Serbian and Macedonian naming traditions. It ultimately traces back to a Hebrew name meaning God is gracious. Its history therefore belongs to the same large family as Ivan, Johann, and Giovanni, each shaped by the language in which it developed.

The initial j has a y-like sound in its traditional Slavic pronunciation. English speakers may read it differently, particularly if their first encounter is with the fragrance brand Jovan. That commercial association is much newer than the personal name. Jovan offers a way to honor a John while preserving a specific Slavic form; its resemblance to Jove does not make it a name for the Roman deity.
