Jules

Jules is the French form of Julius, an ancient Roman family name with an uncertain original meaning. Proposed links with youth or Jupiter appear in name explanations, but none should be presented as a settled translation. Jules has its own long history in French, rather than being only a modern nickname.

Writer Jules Verne is a familiar bearer of the full name. In English, Jules is also used as a short form of Julian, Julia, or Julie, so it can honor several members of the same wider name family. The French and English pronunciations differ, particularly the opening consonant. Those differences are worth considering when the name will be used across languages.
