Jupiter

Jupiter is the name of the principal sky god in Roman religion and of the largest planet in our solar system. The divine name developed from an older expression associated with the sky and fatherhood. In Roman tradition, Jupiter was linked with thunder, oaths, and political authority.

The planet received the god’s name, so the celestial and mythological connections belong to the same historical chain. Jupiter also formed the Capitoline triad with Juno and Minerva, central figures in Roman worship. As a modern given name it is used for both boys and girls, without changing the ancient figure’s identity. Families may be drawn to astronomy or classical stories, and those interests give more precise context than a simple translation such as godfather.
