Kaia

Kaia has an established use in Norwegian and Estonian as a short form of names such as Katarina and Katariina. Through that route it shares the Katherine family’s traditional association with “pure,” although the older name’s earliest meaning is uncertain. This history is different from simply adding an a to another modern name.

Some English-speaking parents also connect Kaia with Kai and its Hawaiian sea meaning, but that does not make “sea” a universal translation of Kaia. Model Kaia Gerber is a recognizable bearer. The familiar English sound is KYE-uh, and Kaja is a related spelling in Northern European naming. Choosing the intended family or language connection helps explain which history lies behind the name.
