Kaleb

Kaleb is a spelling of Caleb, the Hebrew biblical name borne by one of the scouts sent into Canaan. The name is often linked with the Hebrew word for dog, while explanations emphasizing devotion or wholeheartedness are also offered. Its etymology should be distinguished from the biblical character’s qualities.

The K spelling makes the opening sound explicit while keeping the usual English pronunciation close to Caleb. Kale is a possible short form, and Kalev is a related Hebrew form. Families can choose Kaleb for the biblical connection without treating “devotion to God” as the only established literal translation.
