Karen

Karen is an established Danish form of Katherine, traditionally associated with the meaning “pure,” although Katherine’s deeper etymology is uncertain. Karen also occurs independently in Japanese and Armenian naming traditions, where the relevant written form and language history matter. The Danish explanation should therefore not be assigned to every person with this spelling.

For English-speaking families, Karen may be a close relative’s name as well as a familiar twentieth-century choice. Its use as an internet stereotype does not define the people who bear it or erase that family history. Parents considering an honor name can preserve Karen itself or explore the Katherine family while keeping unrelated international uses distinct.
