Karla

Karla is a feminine form of Karl, a Germanic name traditionally associated with a man or free man. The historical wording belongs to the older root and does not limit the modern use of the feminine name. Carla is a closely related form written with an opening “C.”

The two spellings commonly sound alike in English, so family tradition may be a stronger reason to choose one than pronunciation. Kar is a possible informal shortening, although Karla is already brief at two syllables. A family honoring a Karl or Carl can preserve the connection through Karla while giving the child a distinct full name and written ending.
