Kathleen

Kathleen is an English-language form of Irish Caitlín, which belongs to the Katherine name family. Katherine's original meaning is uncertain, although a longstanding association with the Greek word for “pure” has shaped its traditional interpretation. Kathleen therefore carries both an Irish linguistic connection and a place within a much wider international family of names.

The familiar song I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen gives it an additional cultural association. Kate, Katie, and Kathy offer very different everyday styles, while Kathleen itself has a clear two-part rhythm. Compared with Caitlin, the spelling more directly suggests the traditional Kathleen sound to English readers. It can be a thoughtful family honor name when parents want an established full form with several flexible nickname choices.
