Kimberley

Kimberley is a place-derived name whose modern use is connected with the South African city of Kimberley. The city was named for Lord Kimberley, whose title came from an English place. The name therefore carries a chain of geographical and family-name connections, rather than literally meaning diamond or wealth.

The South African city’s diamond history is a familiar association, but it is separate from the older English place-name origin. Kimberley keeps the spelling of the city, while Kimberly is a closely related given-name form. The difference is easy to overlook in conversation because the names are normally heard alike. For parents choosing a family or place connection, that extra e can be an intentional way to preserve the particular spelling that matters to them.
