Klaus

Klaus is a German short form of Nikolaus, the name known in English as Nicholas. The older Greek elements refer to victory and people, giving Klaus a substantial name history within a compact form. Claus is a closely related spelling, while Nikolaus shows the longer name from which the shortening developed.

The connection with Saint Nicholas helps explain why English speakers may associate Claus with Santa Claus. Klaus, however, is also an ordinary established personal name with its own German-language identity. For a family honoring a Nicholas or preserving a German name, it offers a direct traditional route. The shorter form keeps the distinctive ending of Nikolaus rather than the opening used in Nick.
