Lanie

Lanie is a familiar form used for names such as Elaine and Melanie. Those longer names have different histories: Elaine belongs to the Helen family, traditionally associated with light, while Melanie comes from a Greek root meaning dark. Lanie’s meaning therefore depends on the name or family connection from which it is chosen.

It can also stand independently, allowing the everyday form to be the complete legal name. Laney and Lainey are close spelling choices to compare, with each making the same general nickname style visible in a slightly different way. For a family honoring an Elaine or Melanie, Lanie can preserve a personal link while giving the child a shorter name with a distinct written form.
