Larissa

Larissa comes from an ancient place-name tradition, including the city of Larissa in Thessaly. The name is often connected with a word for a citadel or fortified place, though its deeper origins reach beyond a straightforward modern Greek translation. Larisa is another established spelling, and the name also has a long life in Russian use.

Literature adds a particularly familiar association through Larissa, known as Lara, in Doctor Zhivago. The story and its film adaptation gave the name an enduring romantic connection. Larissa also appears in Greek mythology and as the name of a moon of Neptune. Together, those associations offer several paths into the name without requiring a family to choose just one as its inspiration.
