Laurel

Laurel directly names the evergreen plant whose leaves were used for wreaths of honor in ancient Greece and Rome. Its word history reaches back to Latin, and the plant gives it a specific botanical meaning. The connection with achievement comes from the wreath’s cultural use rather than from a promise about the person who bears the name.

Laura is a related comparison, while Laurel keeps the English plant word intact. The word also survives in expressions about winning laurels, which helps explain its symbolic associations. Laurel is used for boys and girls and has a complete two-syllable form without needing a longer formal name.
