Lavinia

Lavinia is an ancient Latin name closely associated with Lavinium, a city in early Roman tradition. Its deeper meaning is uncertain. In the story of Aeneas, Lavinia is the daughter of King Latinus and becomes Aeneas's wife, linking the name with the legendary beginnings of the Roman people. That classical background gives it a history much older than its sometimes Victorian sound suggests.

Writers have continued to return to Lavinia, from Shakespeare's Titus Andronicus to Ursula K. Le Guin's novel Lavinia. These are different characters and interpretations, but together they give the name a substantial literary presence. Vinnie offers a shorter everyday option, while the full form has a flowing, formal rhythm. Families drawn to literary names may appreciate the choice of associations rather than one single dominant reference.
