Lazarus

Lazarus comes through Greek and Latin forms of the Hebrew name Eleazar, meaning “God has helped.” In the New Testament, Lazarus of Bethany is the brother of Mary and Martha whom Jesus raises from the dead. The name also appears in a separate parable, so the two biblical figures should not be confused with one another.

Its three syllables and distinctive ending give Lazarus a more formal sound than shorter biblical choices such as Ezra or Levi. Laz can make an easy everyday shortening. Related forms include Spanish Lázaro and Italian Lazzaro, each carrying its own language's shape. Parents considering Lazarus may appreciate its explicit religious history and themes of restoration while also weighing the strong associations that come with such a recognizable story.
