Lejla

Lejla is the Bosnian form of Layla, an Arabic name meaning night. Its j represents the sound that English readers often associate with y in Layla. The spelling therefore reflects a language tradition rather than an added syllable or a different meaning. Leila and Leyla are other forms found across the wider name family.

The story of Layla and Majnun gives the family a long literary association with love and longing. Lejla carries that background into Bosnian naming, where Arabic-derived names have an established place. For a family with Bosnian connections, the written form can be as significant as the underlying Arabic meaning. The night image is direct and simple, while the literary story adds another layer without changing what the name itself translates to.
