Leonie

Leonie belongs to the family of names built around Leo and Leon, whose meaning is “lion.” It is used in German and corresponds to French Léonie, with the accent often omitted in English-language settings. The longer ending gives the strong animal image a lighter, three-syllable form while preserving a clear connection with names such as Leona.

The French form has a literary association through Aunt Léonie in Marcel Proust's work. Pronunciation varies between French, German, and English use, particularly in the opening vowel and the placement of emphasis. That is worth considering when a family moves between languages. Leonie can also honor a Leo or Leon in the family, carrying the same underlying name into a form with a distinct rhythm of its own.
