Lesly

Lesly is a spelling of Leslie, a Scottish surname taken from a place in Aberdeenshire. The place name is often explained as “garden of holly,” although its older components are not completely certain. Descriptions that combine a word for gray with a separate holly translation obscure that uncertainty rather than resolve it.

Leslie and Lesley are the most useful comparisons for the wider name family. Lesly removes the final vowel from those familiar written forms while preserving the recognizable sound. The surname became a given name before this particular spelling developed, and the family has been used for boys and girls. The place-name origin does not determine the identity or ancestry of every person called Lesly.
