Levy

Levy is a surname and given-name form associated with Levi, the Hebrew biblical name traditionally explained as joined or attached. Levi is one of Jacob’s sons, and the Levites are associated with religious service in Jewish tradition. That history gives the name a specific family and religious context.

Levy’s final y distinguishes it from Levi on the page, and surname pronunciations do not always match the familiar English pronunciation of Levi. A family using an inherited Levy may therefore value its own established sound. Choosing the name does not by itself establish a person’s ancestry or religious role; those depend on family history rather than the spelling alone.
