Lex

Lex is a short form of names such as Alexander, Alexandra, and Alexis. These share a Greek root concerned with defending or protecting. In Alexander and Alexandra, the second element refers to people or men, producing the familiar interpretation defender of people; Alexis expresses the defending idea more directly.

Unlike Alex, Lex drops the opening vowel, creating a very compact one-syllable name. It can serve as a nickname within a longer family name or as the complete name chosen at birth. That flexibility makes its precise meaning depend partly on the full form a family has in mind. Parents considering Lex can compare the broader history of Alexander with the simpler Alexis route while keeping the same practical everyday name.
