Lindsey

Lindsey began as a place-name surname, connected with the English region around Lincoln. Its older form combines a name associated with Lincoln with an element meaning an island, reflecting the surrounding fenland. This geographical history gives the name a fuller background than the familiar but less secure “island of linden trees” explanation.

The surname also has a long Scottish history and later became a given name for boys and girls. Lindsay is the closest spelling comparison. The two endings are matters of naming tradition and personal choice, rather than fixed rules about who can bear the name. Lindsey can preserve a family surname or a regional connection while standing independently as a first name.
