Lionel

Lionel is a French diminutive in the Leon name family, traditionally interpreted as little lion. Its history includes Sir Lionel in Arthurian legend, giving the name a literary connection as well as its animal meaning. The diminutive ending is part of the established name rather than a statement about a child's size or character.

Musicians Lionel Hampton and Lionel Richie and footballer Lionel Messi are familiar bearers. Leonel and Italian Lionello offer related forms with different sounds. English Lionel can be pronounced differently from the versions heard in French or Spanish-speaking families, so the chosen language may guide both its rhythm and its everyday introduction.
