Lizzie

Lizzie is an affectionate English form of Elizabeth, with the meaning my God is an oath inherited from the older Hebrew name Elisheva. It develops from the central Liz sound rather than from the beginning of the full name. Lizzy is another familiar spelling, and either can be used alongside Elizabeth or independently.

The name has a recognizable literary connection through Elizabeth Bennet in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, who is called Lizzy within the novel. That gives the familiar form an association with wit and a lively literary character without making those qualities part of its literal meaning. Lizzie retains the warmth of a family nickname alongside a substantial history behind its longer form.
