Lorna

Lorna owes its established personal-name history to R. D. Blackmore’s novel Lorna Doone, published in 1869. Blackmore created the name for his heroine, apparently drawing on Lorn or Lorne in Scotland. The literary source is much clearer than attempts to give Lorna a direct translation involving laurel or a Latin place-name.

The novel’s setting is in southern England, so the name brings together an English literary creation and a Scottish geographical association. Later bearers include entertainer Lorna Luft and visual artist Lorna Simpson, giving it a life well beyond its original fictional character. A family choosing Lorna might value the novel, the Scottish connection, or an older relative. Its history shows how an author’s invention can become an enduring personal name across generations.
