Lorraine

Lorraine is a French geographical name taken from the historical region in northeastern France. Its meaning is most usefully given as “from Lorraine,” rather than borrowing a definition from a similar-sounding personal name. The region supplies a real place connection, while generations of use as a first name give Lorraine a familiar vintage character.

Playwright Lorraine Hansberry, author of A Raisin in the Sun, is a notable bearer. Lori and Lorrie provide shorter everyday options, and Laraine and Loraine are related spellings. The full name’s second-syllable emphasis sets it apart from many first-syllable-stressed English names. It can be an appealing family honor choice that keeps a substantial formal name alongside a relaxed nickname.
