Louie

Louie is a form of Louis, ultimately connected with the Germanic name Ludwig and elements meaning fame and battle. “Famous in battle” is the traditional interpretation of that name family. The spelling Louie makes the final “ee” sound more apparent to many English readers than Louis, which is pronounced in more than one way.

Lou offers a further shortening, while Louis provides the closely related formal spelling. The song “Louie Louie” gives the name a familiar musical association, and comedian Louie Anderson is another recognizable bearer. Parents can choose Louie as the official name rather than treating it only as a childhood nickname for Louis.
